Have You Always Wanted to Dance Like a Broadway Star?
Have you always wanted to move the way your favorite Broadway characters do, but never had a place to try it as an adult? Maybe you've watched a musical and found yourself more interested in the choreography than anything else. This fall, take your first step with The Dance Barre Southern Illinois Beginning Musical Theatre Jazz Program, a 12-week course created exclusively for adults of all backgrounds and experience levels.
Also known as Broadway Jazz, Musical Theatre Jazz blends jazz technique with the storytelling of the stage. This is a dance class, not a singing or acting class. No vocal performance and no scene work, just movement: dance technique built around character and storytelling, the way it's used on stage. Whether you're brand new to dance or coming back to it after years away, you'll build technique, expression, and confidence in a welcoming, judgment-free environment built just for adults. Our instructors specialize in helping adults succeed, meeting you right where you are.

Meet Your Instructor
With a background in ballet, jazz, and modern, Makenzie is a seasoned performer and choreographer who has appeared in productions including Rocky Horror Live, Oklahoma!, Rock of Ages, and many other musicals. Currently preparing for an upcoming role in Frozen, she brings real-world stage experience and choreographic insight from iconic Broadway shows to every class. Makenzie is dedicated to creating a warm, inclusive environment where beginners and seasoned dancers alike can grow, thrive, and share the joy of musical theatre.

Step Into the Story, One Scene at a Time
Over 12 weeks, you'll build from the ground up, no prior dance experience required:
Warm-Up & Technique
Build the strength, flexibility, and stamina that musical theatre jazz calls for, starting with the basics and progressing each week.
Iconic Styles & Steps
Get comfortable with the styles and steps that show up across musical theatre jazz, including foundational moves like the box step and three-step turns.
Choreography
Learn excerpts of original choreography from some of Broadway's most iconic shows, broken down at a beginner-friendly pace.
Acting Through Movement
Use facial expression, stage presence, and body language to bring a character to life, no spoken lines or singing involved.
By the end of the program, you'll perform a number that brings together everything you've learned, with a real sense of accomplishment.
No previous dance or performance experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to move.
