Contemporary Choreography Workshop

  • Studio 84 1418 Walnut Street Murphysboro, Illinois, 62966 United States (map)

Contemporary dance is about more than steps — it's about how movement feels from the inside out. In this workshop, Ellen breaks down the foundational qualities of contemporary movement: weight, flow, breath, and intention. You'll explore how these elements shape the way a body moves through space, then bring it all together in a feel-good combination you can actually take home. No prior contemporary experience needed. Just show up ready to move.

About Ellen Wilcox — Guest Instructor

A third-generation ballet dancer, Ellen has been dancing since age three and brings more than 25 years of teaching experience with her. As the founder of The Dance Barre, she's bringing her teaching style to Southern Illinois through occasional guest workshops, built on the belief that ballet is for adults at any stage, not just for those who started young.

Ellen Wilcox has spent over 25 years teaching dancers of all ages, with extensive training in ballet alongside a range of other dance styles. Her workshops focus on meeting adults exactly where they are, whether that's a first plié or a return to the barre after years away. She's especially passionate about helping adult students build confidence, strength, and grace at their own pace, in a space free of judgment or comparison.

As the founder of The Dance Barre, based in Bryan, Texas, Ellen has spent years watching students surprise themselves: discovering balance and strength they didn't know they had, finally pursuing something they'd always wanted to try, and finding a community that shares their goals.

Ellen doesn't make it to Southern Illinois often, but she's been watching this community grow from afar, and she's grateful for every one of you who's shown up, stuck with it, and made this studio what it is. While she's in town, she'll be stopping into classes throughout the week to say thank you in person and bringing that same energy to her workshop at Studio 84.

Come take a class, say hello, or stick around after the workshop to chat. She'd love nothing more than to spend some time with the dancers who've made Southern Illinois feel like home.
